In the photo you can see a “Balearic sargantana”, Podarcis lilfordi subspecies gigliolii, shedding the skin.
The island of Dragonera is colonized by this subspecies, characterized by its size, slightly larger than other subspecies.
Thousands of years of insular isolation has led to great variability of subspecies of Podarcis lilfordi.
Along with the ferreret, Balearic frog, the sargantanas are the oldest terrestrial vertebrates of the islands and are protected species.
